Paths to Healing in the Deaf Community is a way to give a voice to Deaf survivors of violence and share information on how to heal from the trauma of such experiences. The videos feature interviews with survivors of crime who are Deaf and highlight their experiences from victimization to becoming a survivor; how to recognize symptoms of stress and trauma, when to implement self-care techniques or to seek help, examples of self-care techniques, and how to create a plan for healing.

All videos feature people from the Deaf community as well as reflect the diversity of that community, including individuals from the LGBTQ community, people of color, and older adults.

Recommendations for Rape Crisis Centers working with sexual violence survivors coming home from incarceration

The Returning and Healing Toolkit is a roadmap to prepare mainstream rape crisis centers/sexual violence prevention agencies to serve the needs of formerly incarcerated survivors. It provides background information about incarceration and reentry, and a set of steps for agencies to take in order to be accessible for this population.

Sexual Trauma in the Returning Population and Talking About Sexual Violence

This curriculum is a two-part series for advocates that support reentering people successfully re-integrate into their communities after incarceration. The first module will help advocates understand the prevalence and impact of sexual violence on the reentering population. The second introduces basic trauma-informed questions advocates can use in their intakes processes, in order to determine if sexual trauma is a challenge their clients want help to address.

Supplemental Questions about Sexual Violence

This is a set of three tip sheets that explain how reentry agencies can ask basic, trauma-informed questions to their clients in order to determine if sexual violence is an issue they want to address. These tips sheets work in conjunction with the Returning and Healing training curriculum.

Language Access: The Lessons that COVID-19 has Reinforced

The current COVID-19 crisis is not over yet; however, in a short time we have seen how gaps in the system for language access are exacerbated by a pandemic. Did we know what to do in a crisis? Were we prepared to ensure that everyone had access to information and services in their first language? What do we do during an emergency or a disaster? How does our language access plan monitoring help us achieve a more organized response? What went wrong, and how can we be sure that we do not make those mistakes again? Through this virtual training we will share lessons learned and answer these and other questions regarding language access preparedness, responsiveness and monitoring.

Objectives:

• Understand the implications and impact of the COVID-19 crisis on Limited English Proficient communities and survivors;
• Learn about language access compliance and monitoring and how they can be our guide for language access emergency preparedness; and
• Create a framework under which programs can create policies and protocols that facilitate access during a crisis.

This unprecedented health crisis is challenging for most of us. For people who have experienced trauma it can be even more so. The isolation of the statewide Safer-at-Home orders and the unpredictability of the coronavirus can trigger flashbacks and panic attacks. The fear of contracting Covid-19 can create high anxiety making it hard for survivors to cope. The uncertainty and potential chaos of hospital responses may make it difficult for survivors to seek care if they need it. In this hour-long virtual discussion we will explore what you can do to help and offer a few resources.

During a public health crisis, the survivors you serve need your support even more. COVID-19 is an uncontrollable threat and is raising fear and anxiety. As advocates, you can help survivors manage these fears and help them cope with the added anxiety this crisis brings up. To help you help survivors, we’ve developed a few infographics and a compilation of tips that survivors may find useful. We’ve written these with the survivor as the audience. Feel free to distribute these infographics and utilize the tip sheet as needed. You cut and paste these tips into emails, text, and message apps. You can also use these to create your own fact sheets.

Healthcare Guide During a Crisis: Survivors of violence, especially those who’ve survived child sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, or sexual assault, can find visiting the doctor or going to a health clinic really challenging. The chaos of waiting areas, emergency rooms and the vulnerability of being sick can combine to make these experiences anxiety producing and triggering. There are steps survivors can take to make accessing healthcare a little easier. This guide is to help survivors prepare should they need care due to COVID-19.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth is Violence Prevention Social Media Kit

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people experience higher rates of sexual assault and intimate partner violence than do non-LGBTQ+ adults. This disparity not only starts in childhood — where studies show LGBTQ+ youth experience higher rates of child abuse and assault — but is rooted in childhood: children who experience adverse childhood experiences face higher adult victimization rates than children whose development is unaffected (or less affected) by trauma.

Two unique types of adverse childhood experiences LGBTQ+ youth face are anti-LGBTQ bullying at school and home. While these LGBTQ-specific problems likely raise the chances of subsequent adult victimization, they also present opportunities for prevention intervention.

The “Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth is Violence Prevention Social Media Toolkit” is designed to make it as easy as possible for victim service agencies, allied professionals, and other concerned individuals and organizations to undertake a public education and activation campaign designed to support LGBTQ children and youth and disrupt the path to lifelong victimization. The toolkit provides eye-catching, upload-ready posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that address six topics:

Higher victimization rates for LGBTQ+ children, youth, and adults

The lifelong impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) on victimization rates

The connections between school- and home-based bullying and risk of violence

How home-based bullying and conversion therapy practices affect LGBTQ+ children and youth

What victim services providers can do to interrupt the higher LGBTQ+ victimization pathway

What any adult can do to interrupt the higher LGBTQ victimization pathway

The toolkit also includes colorful and engaging images and text designed to directly support LGBTQ children and youth.

How to use this Social Media Toolkit

Download the zipped files that contain all social media post text, graphics, and suggested hashtags. The zipped files include: three Microsoft Word files – specific to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – with 36 social media posts; 36 images to correspond with the social media posts; and image file names correspond with the Word file post headers.
